Lesson: Accessible EV Infrastructure – High School

High School Lesson Plan (Grades 9–12)

Lesson Title
Designing Fair EV Infrastructure

Time Required
60–75 minutes

Learning Objectives
Students will:

  • Understand equity challenges in EV infrastructure

  • Analyze how housing, income, and location affect access

  • Explore design solutions for inclusive infrastructure

  • Practice critical thinking around public systems

Key Concepts

  • Infrastructure equity

  • Public vs private charging

  • Urban, suburban, and rural differences

  • Accessibility and safety

Lesson Introduction
Present the idea that EV adoption is increasing, but access to charging is uneven. Ask students who they think benefits most from EVs right now and why.

Classroom Activity: Equity Design Challenge
Divide students into small groups. Each group represents a different community:

  • Dense urban apartment neighborhood

  • Rural town

  • Suburban area

  • Senior-heavy community

Each group must propose:

  • Where chargers should be placed

  • What features they should include

  • How people without smartphones would find them

  • How safety concerns are addressed

Groups present their designs.

Discussion Questions

  • How does infrastructure reflect social priorities?

  • Should governments fund public charging? Why or why not?

  • What groups are most at risk of being left out?

Optional Extension
Students research their local community and assess how accessible EV charging currently is.
