Lesson: Barriers to Micromobility and Street Design – Elementary

Elementary Lesson Plan (Grades 4–6)

Lesson Title
Who Gets to Ride?

Time Required
45–60 minutes

Learning Objectives
Students will:

  • Learn what micromobility is

  • Understand that streets are shared spaces

  • Identify barriers that make riding harder for some people

  • Practice thinking about fairness in community design

Key Concepts (Student-Friendly)

  • Micromobility means small electric vehicles like e-bikes and e-scooters

  • Streets are for more than cars

  • Some people face challenges using new transportation

  • Fair design helps everyone move safely

Lesson Introduction
Ask students how they get to school or the park. Introduce e-bikes and e-scooters and explain that not all streets are built to support them safely.

Classroom Activity: Street Makeover
Provide students with a simple drawing of a street with cars only. Ask them to redesign it to include:

  • Bike lanes

  • Sidewalks

  • Crossings

  • Space for e-scooters

Students explain how their changes help different people.

Discussion Questions

  • Why might riding feel unsafe on some streets?

  • Who benefits when streets are safer?

  • How do streets show what a community cares about?

Optional Extension
Students observe a real street near their school and note who uses it and who might feel left out.
