Lesson: EVs in Rural and Remote Areas – Elementary

Elementary Lesson Plan (Grades 4–6)

Lesson Title
Can Electric Cars Work Everywhere?

Time Required
45–60 minutes

Learning Objectives
Students will:

  • Understand that Canada has many different types of communities

  • Learn why rural and remote areas face unique transportation challenges

  • Explore how solar energy can help power EVs

  • Build empathy for communities with fewer resources

Key Concepts (Student-Friendly)

  • Rural means far apart

  • Electricity can come from the sun

  • Some places do not have many gas stations or chargers

  • Solutions can look different depending on location

Lesson Introduction
Ask students where they think most electric cars are used. Show a city image and a rural image. Discuss how living far apart changes how people travel and fuel their vehicles.

Classroom Activity: Powering a Remote Community
Students work in small groups and are given a fictional remote town. Each town has:

  • Long distances

  • Few buildings

  • Limited power supply

Students decide:

  • Where electricity comes from

  • Where an EV charger could be placed

  • How solar panels might help

Groups draw or describe their solutions.

Discussion Questions

  • Why might gas be more expensive in remote areas?

  • Why would solar power be helpful in places far from cities?

  • Should rural communities get different support than cities?

Optional Extension
Students imagine a day in the life of someone living in a remote town with an EV.
