Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Recognize and define common ZEV-related terms

  • Understand basic differences between gas-powered and electric vehicles

  • Use new vocabulary correctly in discussion or simple activities

Key Vocabulary

  • Zero-emission vehicle (ZEV)

  • Electric vehicle (EV)

  • Battery

  • Charging station

  • Electricity

  • Emissions

(Exact wording and list can be refined later.)

Materials Needed

  • Printed vocabulary cards or worksheet

  • Whiteboard or chart paper

  • Markers

Lesson Structure

Introduction

Begin by asking students how cars usually move and what they need to run. Introduce the idea that some vehicles do not use gas and instead run on electricity. Explain that today’s lesson is about learning new words used to talk about these vehicles.

Main Activity

Introduce each vocabulary word one at a time.
For each term:

  • Read the word aloud

  • Give a simple explanation

  • Ask students to share what they think it means or where they’ve seen it

Optional activity:
Students match words to simple definitions or pictures related to EVs and charging.

Guided Discussion

  • Why do you think people talk about emissions?

  • How is charging different from filling a gas tank?

  • Where might you see a charging station in your community?

Assessment

  • Participation in discussion

  • Correct matching or use of vocabulary terms

  • Informal check for understanding through questioning

Extension Activity (Optional)

Students draw a vehicle of the future and label it using at least three new vocabulary words from the lesson.

Teacher Notes

This lesson is intended as an introduction. Definitions can be kept simple and revisited in later lessons that explore EVs in more detail.
