As the sun stays out longer and the weather warms up, the summer e-mobility season is officially here! Whether you are cruising on an e-bike, navigating the streets on an e-scooter, or plugging in an electric vehicle (EV), our community is at a major turning point.
Earlier this spring, we released the Micro-ZEV Awareness and Perceptions Survey Report. The findings gave us an incredibly clear picture of how you move, what you care about, and where we still face hurdles. Above all, the results highlighted that true community mobility relies on balance: matching our enthusiasm for green transportation with equal commitments to safety, local accessibility, and infrastructure care.
As we kick off the busiest riding season of the year, here is a reminder of what the community shared in the survey—and how you can directly implement those findings into your daily summer travel.
1. Safety First: Ditch the Sidewalks, Share the Roads
One of the most resounding data points from the public survey focused on pedestrian safety and public space harmony. A significant majority of respondents expressed concern over e-scooters and high-speed e-bikes zipping down pedestrian sidewalks.
-
- The Survey Insight: Sidewalk riding vastly increases the risk of accidents, particularly for Elders, children, and individuals with limited mobility.
- Summer Implementation:
- Keep it on designated paths: Treat your e-scooter or e-bike like a vehicle. Stick to designated bike lanes, multi-use trails, or the right side of the road.
- Watch your speed: Even on shared trails, yield to walkers and announce your presence using a bell or a friendly “on your left” before passing.
2. Battery Awareness: Be Smart About Charging and Storage
As e-mobility grows, so does our reliance on high-powered lithium-ion batteries. Our report highlighted that while people love the range of modern e-bikes and EVs, many are still
unfamiliar with basic electrical safety protocols.
- The Survey Insight: A notable gap exists in public knowledge regarding battery maintenance and safe storage, which is critical to preventing overheating during the hot summer months.
- Summer Implementation:
- Never leave charging unattended: Don’t leave your e-bike or e-scooter plugged in overnight or while you are away from home. Always use the manufacturer-approved charger.
- Beat the heat: Avoid storing your micro-mobility devices or their batteries in direct summer sunlight or inside a baking car trunk. Keep them in cool, dry, ventilated areas.
3. Respecting Shared Spaces: Park Responsibly
Shared micro-mobility programs bring amazing flexibility to our summers, allowing us to pick up a ride and drop it off when we reach our destination. However, the survey revealed that “dockless friction”—where abandoned scooters block ramps, pathways, and building entrances—is a major community pain point.
-
- The Survey Insight: Accessibility matters. Poorly parked e-scooters create physical barriers that actively isolate community members who rely on clear paths.
- Summer Implementation:
- The “Clear Path” Rule: When you finish a ride, park your device in a designated hub or upright against a curb.
- Check the surroundings: Make sure you aren’t blocking wheelchair ramps, doorways, bus stops, or tactical walking tiles. If it blocks a pedestrian, it’s parked incorrectly!
4. Championing Intercommunity and Equity-Driven Travel
A major takeaway from the Ispiciwin report was that e-mobility isn’t just a fun summer hobby—it is a vital tool for economic and social security. Affordable, accessible clean transportation helps bridge the gap for community members traveling between residential areas, workplaces, and essential services.
-
- The Survey Insight: Respondents overwhelmingly supported the expansion of affordable, safe, and community-led transportation networks that keep equity at the center.
- Summer Implementation:
- Support local initiatives: If you are a business owner, consider installing accessible e-bike racks or charging hubs near your entrance to support clean commuters.
- Ride share and educate: Encourage friends and family who may experience transport barriers to try out local e-mobility options. True sustainability means making sure nobody gets left behind.
Let’s Move Forward Together
The data from the Micro-ZEV Awareness and Perceptions Survey Report isn’t meant to sit on a digital shelf. It is a living blueprint for how we can co-create a safer, greener, and more connected community. By adjusting how we ride, where we park, and how we care for our devices this summer, we turn that data into real-world progress.
Have a wonderful, safe, and energized summer season!
